Why Fiber Bond Chose Spor-Ax®
Fiber Bond uses Spor-Ax® antimicrobial in the adhesives and binders that connect otherwise loose fibers together in to filter media. This use thoroughly incorporates Spor-Ax® into the media, so it becomes an integral part of the media as it is manufactured. This is clearly different from and clearly preferred to treat air filters with other antimicrobial agents.
In selecting an antimicrobial, Fiber Bond was interested in a material that would become an integral part of the media and could not be carried or leached out. Fiber Bond selected an agent that is registered for use in adhesives to become a permanent part of the media. Fiber Bond rejected other materials that could only be applied to the surface after a filter is made. This is an important difference in selecting among antimicrobial products. It is also important to select the most effective antimicrobial with the best safety profile. That is why Fiber Bond selected Spor-Ax®. Fiber Bond wanted a biocide rather than a bio-stat because when given a choice a biocide is a more effective method in preventing the growth of microorganisms. Fiber Bond was impressed that Spor-Ax® had the effectiveness and safety that gave manufacturers of soft drinks the confidence to use the same material in the sealants for their soft drink cans. Also liking the verity of the same material being used with confidence in children’s finger paints and registered with the EPA, as well as clearance for use in formulations under the regulations of the U.S.D.A and F.D.A.

An antimicrobial is a substance capable of inhibiting or destroying the growth of microorganisms.
Microbial growth can be easily visible on the surface of the filter or as hidden growth within the media. The build-up of microbial growth can cause an increase in resistance and reduce the usable service life of the filter.

This building used to use 65% rigid cells with a 4”pre filter. The initial static pressure was over .50” with the cell being replaced annually and the pleated pre filters every 6 months. Phil came in and presented Fiberbond Products to me and it made a lot of sense. The majority of the particulates in Southern California air is man created such as automotive exhaust and construction dust all of which are large particles, with regards to micron size, nothing in comparison to something like a microorganism. ASHRAE suggests a minimal rating of MERV 9 air filters for general air applications, the Fiberbond MERV 9 Dustlok Cubes w/Spor-Ax ended up being the perfect product for us. They’re MERV 9 rated, 90% @ 10 microns, contain the safest and most effective anti-microbial in the market, highly durable and cost effective. I dropped my initial static pressure drop from over .50” to .14” @ 2000 cfm conserving tremendous amounts of energy and they protect our coils like no other product I’ve even seen in all my years in this field. Not to mention we dropped our annual filtration and labor costs by 75%
